That being said, all the rain that fell in the evenings could easily be found in the infield as the draining on the field as atrocious.

For those who were unaware, despite being hosted in Charlottetown, the group running the meet was actually the individuals running the World Junior Championships next year in Moncton, NB. I can't speak to the treatment of athletes with respect to the athlete control centre, but the group tried its best to run on time to the minute. Unfortunately, this was sometimes done at its own peril with the meet occasionally running late as they wouldn't move anything a second earlier.

Suzanne Leroux was again one of the announcers at nationals, but this time she was also joined by a gentleman, but I am unaware of who he was. While I can appreciate the desire to put new voices to the national meets, I would certainly not recommend this individual to any meet in the future as he rambled on and on at times, could not get names straight and sounded like he had never been to a track meet at times. Clearly, well below the level of other national championship commenters.

On the track and in the field there were certainly many outstanding performances. Certainly Julie Labonte's new Canadian Junior Record in the shot put has to rank right up there. My favourite race had to be the women's 1500m. Kendra Schaaf and Jessica Parry were clearly on a mission, taking the pace out hard. I've already mentioned the blistering pace, but the tactics used were the must enticing as a spectator. Kendra led for 900m with Jessica sitting right on her behind. I few noted they think Jessica made her move a little early which is likely true given her decreased pace on the home stretch as Kendra moved past Jess. The result for Kendra was a new meet record with a 4:20 clock. She later followed up this performance with a 9:14 3k to set another championship record.

Other meet records this weekend included Brent Roubos of Orillia braking the discus standard in the fifth round of the men's competition. Shortly after Brent's effort, Caroline Ehrhardt from Sudbury raised the standard in the women's triple jump. This comes after Caroline's Canadian High School Record jump for this season's OFSAA championship. As well, Gregory MacNeil continued to add to his excellent season with a 13.8 clocking to lower the 110 hurdle meet record. I believe that is all of the championship record's.

One of the most dominating performance in the field certainly was put forth by Barrie's Alanna Kovacs who defended her javelin title from 2008 and also picked up a discus crown and a bronze in the shot put. Maybe most impressive of all was that each result was personal best from the Depaul University student.

Finally, the men from the west showed they were ready to run, as Akeem Haynes of Alberta. took home the junior 100m title in 10.49 (+0.3). Haynes finished second to BC's Rohan Stewart in the 200m with Rohan stoping the clock in a wind aided 20.92 seconds. It was Rohan's second title of the weekend as he pulled off the "Michael Johnson" double with a 47.96 clocking on Saturday.

So that's all from Charlottetown. Next up on the national schedule is Sherbrooke in 2 weeks time. Hope to see all the familiar faces.

<img width='1' height='1' Leading the hurdles was the London Legion's AJ Beasley who stopped the clock in 15.05 (+2.9) out of heat two. Behind Beasley was Vincent Schnabl from BC, who ran 15.66. Rounding out the top three was Day 1 leader Taylor Corney with a 16.08 second clocking.

After six events Corney continued to lead with 4212 pts, seemingly on pace to break his personal best 6391. The only mark I've heard so far has been a 54m opener for Suyi Georgewill of York University Track Club.

Women's Discus qualifying complete

After faulting her first two attempts, like her performance at national seniors, Barrie's Alanna Kovacs rebounded with a 40.78m attempt. The mark was the second best performance of the qualifying round which was led by Julie Labonte who is more known for her prowess in the shot put circle. Other notable qualifiers included Laura Macauley and Lauren Stewart from BC, Katie Klodnicki from Hamilton and Meredith Allan from London. The cut off mark to make the final was 34.37m by Kim Elliot from Saskatoon.

Currently in the field is men's long jump qualifying and men's hammer which is warming up for the final. Quick word is that Taylor Stewart, has automatically qualified for the final.

Canadian Junior Track and Field Championships start

The weather has been nice so far to the athletes as the predicted rain has held off despite clouds moving in. Already in the books is the women's long jump qualifying where the twelve participants for Saturday's final have been selected. Leading the qualifying round was World Youth Championships participant Caroline Ebhardt who jumped 5.79m (+1.8) on her second attempt. Aleshia Cobb from BC was second with a wind aided 5.63m while top ranked Christabel Nettey lept to 5.60m on her first attempt to go into the final ranked 4th.

In the first qualifying group for the women's discus, Quebec's Julie Labonte was among three athletes who reached the automatic standard of 38.08m. So far in flight two, Laura MacCauley of BC and Alanna Kovacs from Barrie are through to the final with the automatic standard. Kovacs recently finished third at the Canadian Senior Championships held in Toronto.
